Sullivan Sweeten: Life After Everybody Loves Raymond and the 2025 Reunion

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 25, 2026October 2, 2026

Sullivan Sweeten is an American former child actor best known as Michael Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. He was born on May 12, 1995, and grew up on the CBS sitcom with his twin brother, Sawyer Sweeten, and older sister, Madylin Sweeten. The show ended in 2005, when Sullivan was 10. He then stepped away from acting and kept a low profile for many years. In November 2025, he returned for the show’s 30th anniversary reunion and spoke about Sawyer, who died in 2015.

His life has moved in two very different stages. The first was public and began before he could remember it. The second was much quieter. That contrast is why people still search for him. Fans remember the little boy on TV, but the 2025 reunion gave them a rare look at the adult he became.

A Childhood on Everybody Loves Raymond

Sullivan was born in Brownwood, Texas, on May 12, 1995. His twin brother, Sawyer, was born the same day. Their older sister Madylin was also still a young child when the family entered television.

Everybody Loves Raymond began on CBS in September 1996. Sullivan played Michael Barone, one of the twin sons of Ray and Debra Barone. Sawyer played Geoffrey. Madylin played their older sister, Ally.

The casting gave the show a natural family link. The children who played siblings on screen were siblings at home too.

Sullivan was about 16 months old when the show began. He spent much of his early childhood on the same set. By the time the final episode aired in May 2005, the series had run for nine seasons.

The show became one of the best-known family comedies of its time. Ray Romano played sportswriter Ray Barone. Patricia Heaton played his wife, Debra. Brad Garrett played Ray’s brother, Robert. Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle played his parents, Marie and Frank.

The Sweeten children grew up around that cast. For them, the set was not only a job. It was part of childhood.

Growing Up While Millions Watched

Most children spend their early years at home and school. Sullivan also had scripts, cameras, sets, and a large TV crew around him.

That made his childhood unusual, but the series did not turn the children into the main stars. Most stories focused on the adults and their family fights. Michael, Geoffrey, and Ally helped make the Barone home feel real.

The twins were very young when they started. That also meant they grew up with the same people around them for years. The cast watched them change from toddlers into school-age children.

At the 2025 reunion, that long bond was easy to see. The adults did not speak about Sullivan and Madylin like distant former co-workers. They spoke with the warmth of people who had known them since childhood.

When the show ended, Sullivan was still only 10. He had already spent almost all of the years he could remember working on television.

Stepping Away From Acting

After Everybody Loves Raymond, Sullivan did not build a large acting career.

That choice made his life very different from many former child stars. He did not move from one TV series to another. He did not spend his teen years chasing film roles or giving regular interviews.

A short film called Casting, released in 2017, is one of the few later acting credits tied to his name.

For the most part, he stayed out of public view.

That long break matters because it shows that fame was not the center of his adult life. The sitcom made him known, but he did not spend the next 20 years trying to stay famous.

Fans therefore had very little new information about him for a long time. His return in 2025 felt important because it was rare.

Losing His Twin Brother Sawyer

The hardest part of Sullivan’s adult story came in April 2015.

Sawyer died by suicide shortly before the twins turned 20. He had played Geoffrey Barone throughout Everybody Loves Raymond and had shared the same childhood set with Sullivan.

The loss was felt by the whole family and by the cast.

Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton, Phil Rosenthal, and others spoke publicly after Sawyer’s death. Madylin also asked people to reach out to loved ones and later took part in work linked to suicide prevention.

For Sullivan, the loss was deeply personal. Sawyer was not only his co-star. He was his twin.

They had grown up together on the same show, worked beside each other, and shared many of the same childhood memories.

Sullivan did not turn that grief into a public career. He stayed mostly private for the next decade.

Returning to the Barone Home in 2025

CBS brought much of the cast back together in November 2025 for Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion.

Ray Romano and creator Phil Rosenthal hosted the 90-minute special. Patricia Heaton, Brad Garrett, Monica Horan, Madylin Sweeten, and Sullivan joined them. CBS described the reunion as a celebration of the comedy’s nine-season run and its lasting family appeal.

The network rebuilt parts of the Barone home. The cast watched old clips, shared memories, and talked about the people they had lost.

Sullivan’s return carried extra weight because Sawyer was not there.

The reunion honored three late members of the Raymond family: Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and Sawyer Sweeten.

Ray Romano spoke to Madylin and Sullivan about their brother. It was one of the most personal parts of the special.

Sullivan then shared how he thinks about Sawyer today.

Remembering Sawyer Through Good Memories

The Los Angeles Times reported that Sullivan tries to focus on the best times he shared with his twin.

Many of those memories came from the Everybody Loves Raymond set.

That detail gives the old show a deeper meaning. Fans see the episodes as a comedy from the 1990s and 2000s. For Sullivan, the same episodes are tied to years spent beside his brother.

The set was where the twins worked, played, learned, and grew up.

That is why the reunion was more than a TV event for him. It brought him back to a place linked to some of his best memories of Sawyer.

His comments were simple and personal. He did not try to turn the loss into a dramatic speech.

The focus stayed on love, memory, and the years they had together.

Suicide Prevention Became Part of the Reunion

Madylin also spoke during the reunion about suicide prevention.

She said that she and Sullivan work with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. She also stressed that many people who seek help survive.

The point was not used as a long speech or a celebrity campaign. It came from their family’s own loss.

Sullivan has not built a public role as a full-time mental health activist. His life is still private. But the reunion showed that he and his sister have used their experience to support a cause tied closely to Sawyer’s memory.

That gave the special a purpose beyond looking back at old jokes and scenes.

A Reunion, Not an Acting Comeback

Sullivan’s return to CBS did not mean he was starting a new acting career.

The network described the event as a reunion. Ray Romano and Phil Rosenthal also said they were not planning a reboot of the original series.

The special was about the show’s history and the people who made it.

For Sullivan, the event offered a chance to return to a place that had shaped his childhood. It also gave him a chance to speak about Sawyer in a calm and honest way.

As of 2026, there is no widely reported new acting project showing that he has returned to Hollywood full time.

His public story is therefore quite clear. He acted through childhood, stepped away, stayed private, and later returned for one event that had deep family meaning.

His Bond With Madylin Sweeten

Madylin and Sullivan appeared together at the reunion.

Their lives took different paths after the show. Madylin stayed closer to the arts and later became involved in creative work and mental health causes. Sullivan stayed much farther from public life.

Still, Sawyer’s loss gave them a shared cause.

At the reunion, Sullivan spoke about good memories. Madylin spoke about asking for help and supporting suicide prevention.

Their words fit together. One looked back at their brother. The other looked toward people who may be struggling now.

The moment also showed that the Sweeten family story did not end when Everybody Loves Raymond went off the air.

Why Raymond Fans Still Remember Him

Sullivan Sweeten remains part of the show’s history because viewers watched him grow up.

Michael Barone was not the loudest person in the house. The adults drove most of the comedy. But the children helped make the family feel complete.

Fans who watched the series in its original run remember the twins as little boys. Many of those fans are now adults themselves.

Seeing Sullivan return in 2025 made the passing of time very clear.

He came back as an adult, not as a former child star trying to restart an old career. His most important comments were about family, grief, and memory.

That quiet return fits the life he has led since the show ended.

Sullivan Sweeten is now best understood as a former child actor who chose privacy after a very public childhood. Everybody Loves Raymond remains the work that made him known. The 2025 reunion added a new chapter by showing how much those years still mean to him, especially because so many of his best memories include his twin brother.
