Cheryl Crabtree Walker: Paul Walker’s Mother, Family, and Lasting Legacy

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 26, 2026October 2, 2026

Cheryl Crabtree Walker is the mother of the late Fast & Furious actor Paul Walker. Before his rise to fame, she worked as a fashion model. Later court records also described her as a registered nurse. She raised a large family in Southern California and stayed close to Paul throughout his life.

Her story reaches beyond a famous surname. It includes family life, work, grief, and the charity that became one of Paul’s most important legacies.

A Family Rooted in Southern California

Paul Walker was born in Glendale, California, on September 12, 1973. He was the oldest of five children. His younger siblings were Aimee, Ashlie, Caleb, and Cody.

Their father, Paul William Walker III, worked as a sewer contractor. He also had a background in amateur boxing. Cheryl had worked as a fashion model. EBSCO’s biography of Paul identifies her as a model, while later court reporting described her as a registered nurse.

The family lived in the Los Angeles area. Paul spent much of his youth in the Sunland neighborhood. He began appearing in commercials as a small child. Later came television roles, modeling jobs, and film work.

Some websites say his mother pushed him into acting. That claim is often repeated, but strong sources do not give a full account of every early audition. What is clear is that Paul entered the business very young and grew up in a home where modeling was already familiar.

His career built slowly. He appeared in shows such as Highway to Heaven and later moved into teen films. The Fast and the Furious changed everything in 2001. The film made him a global star and began the role that would define his career.

Fame did not cut him off from home. His family stayed close. Caleb and Cody later became part of the public story too, especially after Paul’s death.

Paul’s Last Morning at His Mother’s Home

November 30, 2013 began as a normal family day.

Paul was at his mother’s home with his daughter, Meadow. Cheryl later said they were talking about the holidays. They planned to get a Christmas tree that evening.

Then Paul remembered that he had to be somewhere.

He was due at a charity event linked to Reach Out WorldWide, the relief group he had founded in 2010. He left for the event and later rode in a Porsche Carrera GT driven by his friend Roger Rodas.

The car crashed in Santa Clarita. Both men died.

Years later, Cheryl spoke about that morning in interviews tied to the 2018 documentary I Am Paul Walker. She remembered a warm talk in the kitchen and the sudden rush when her son realized he was late.

That memory gave the public a very different view of Paul. Fans knew the actor from fast cars and action films. His mother remembered a son making Christmas plans with his daughter.

The documentary used family interviews and old footage to show more of his private life. It covered his love of the ocean, his friends, his family, and his charity work.

For Cheryl Crabtree Walker, the film offered a way to speak about the person behind the movie star.

Grief and the Guardianship Case Involving Meadow

The months after Paul’s death were hard for the whole family.

In March 2014, Cheryl filed a petition asking to become Meadow Walker’s legal guardian. Meadow was 15 at the time.

Associated Press reports said the filing was tied to Paul’s wishes and concerns about Meadow’s care. Court papers said Meadow had been staying with her grandmother after her father’s death.

The filing also raised concerns about Meadow’s mother, Rebecca Soteros.

The case did not end with Cheryl becoming guardian.

By May, a court-appointed lawyer told the judge that Meadow had enough support. The plan included her mother, a nanny, and other adults around her. Cheryl then asked to end her petition, citing Meadow’s wishes.

The judge dismissed the case.

That sequence is important. Online summaries often turn the matter into a simple family fight. The court record shows a more delicate situation. A teenage girl had lost her father. Her family was trying to work out where she would live and who would care for her.

The final plan kept the court from taking a larger role.

Reach Out WorldWide Became Part of the Family Legacy

Paul founded Reach Out WorldWide after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He wanted skilled volunteers to reach disaster areas fast.

The charity’s own history adds a small but important detail about his mother. Paul once explained that his mother was a nurse while talking about the kind of people who could help after a disaster.

That family link makes Cheryl’s later support for the group easy to understand.

Paul died while attending a fundraising event for the charity. After his death, his brothers and other supporters kept the group running.

Cody Walker later became its chief executive officer.

In 2016, Cheryl appeared during a fundraiser for Reach Out WorldWide. She thanked fans for standing behind the group. She said her son lived on through the people who kept his work going.

Her words were simple, but the point was clear. Charity had become one of the ways the family could carry Paul’s name forward without turning his death into a memorial alone.

Reach Out WorldWide is still active. It sends small teams to help after storms, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters.

The work gives Paul’s family a living link to something he cared about deeply.

The Fast & Furious Family Stayed Close

Paul’s movie family also stayed close after the crash.

Cody later said members of the Fast & Furious cast came to Cheryl’s home soon after Paul died. Some stayed around the family during those first painful days.

That support mattered. Paul had spent years working with many of the same people. They were not only co-stars by then.

Vin Diesel also stayed close to the family and supported Reach Out WorldWide. He has spoken often about Paul’s effect on his own life as a father.

Caleb and Cody later helped with Furious 7. The filmmakers used the brothers, older footage, and visual effects to finish Paul’s remaining scenes.

For Cheryl Crabtree Walker, the franchise became tied to both pride and loss. It had made her son famous around the world. It also brought a group of people into the family’s life who stayed after he was gone.

The 2018 documentary added to that bond. Family members, friends, and people from Paul’s career shared stories that were not about box office totals or celebrity gossip.

They spoke about who he was when the cameras were off.

A Mother’s Memories Changed How Fans Saw Paul

Cheryl has often focused on small memories when she speaks about her son.

She has talked about his last morning, the Christmas tree they planned to buy, and letters from people around the world. Those details feel very different from the usual story of a movie star lost in a car crash.

They show why Paul’s family wanted people to see more than the Fast & Furious image.

He was also a father, brother, surfer, ocean lover, friend, and charity founder.

Cheryl Crabtree Walker lived through every stage of that story. She saw her son work in front of cameras as a child. She watched him become famous. She then faced his sudden death and the hard family choices that followed.

Years later, her public role remained tied to memory and service. She took part in I Am Paul Walker. She supported Reach Out WorldWide. She thanked the fans who helped keep that work alive.

Paul’s career will always be a large part of why people know the Walker family. Yet his mother’s story adds something different.

It shows the home life behind the star, the grief behind the headlines, and the family effort to keep one part of his life moving forward.
