Michael Cannata Jr.: Doris Roberts’ Son, Manager, and Producer

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 20, 2026October 2, 2026
Michael Cannata Jr.

Michael Cannata Jr. is the only child of actress Doris Roberts, best known for playing Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. He worked behind the scenes in entertainment, including as his mother’s manager, and later received producer credits, including on Margarine Wars. He also built a family with his wife, Jane. His life stayed mostly outside the spotlight even as Roberts became widely known for playing Marie Barone.

His connection to Roberts was both personal and professional. While she became famous on television, Michael worked behind the scenes and helped manage part of her career. At home, he was also the link between Roberts and the grandchildren she spoke about with obvious affection.

Michael Cannata Jr. Grew Up as Doris Roberts’ Only Child

Roberts married Michael Cannata Sr. in 1956. Their marriage ended in 1962, and she later married writer William Goyen in 1963.

Roberts spent years working in theater, television, and film while raising her son. Her career included Broadway work, guest roles, and later regular parts on shows such as Angie and Remington Steele.

By the time she joined Everybody Loves Raymond in 1996, Michael was already an adult with a family of his own.

He Became His Mother’s Manager

One of the clearest parts of Michael Cannata Jr.’s career was his work as Doris Roberts’ manager.

In a 2002 profile, the Los Angeles Times reported that Michael managed his mother while she was starring on Everybody Loves Raymond.

The job placed him close to the business side of her career. Roberts was already a veteran actor, but the CBS sitcom brought a new level of fame and steady attention.

She also trusted her son enough to joke about money and contract talks. When the Times asked whether she trusted him to negotiate well for her, Roberts joked that the money would all be his one day anyway.

The exchange sounded playful, but it also showed how closely their family and working lives had become connected.

Everybody Loves Raymond Changed the Scale of Her Career

Roberts had worked for decades before Everybody Loves Raymond, but Marie Barone became her signature role.

The show premiered in 1996 and ran for nine seasons. Roberts appeared throughout the series and won four Primetime Emmy Awards for playing Ray Romano’s sharp, intrusive, and often hilarious mother.

As Roberts’ profile grew, Michael’s role placed him on the business side of the career that made her a household name. He stayed behind the scenes while she handled the public work.

A Family Life With Jane and Three Children

Michael built a family with his wife, Jane.

When Doris Roberts died in 2016, the Los Angeles Times listed Michael, Jane, and their three children among her surviving family members. The grandchildren were named Kelsey, Andrew, and Devon Cannata.

Roberts spoke warmly about those grandchildren years before her death. In a 2000 interview quoted by the Times, she said that although she was at an age when she did not have to do much, she did have to see her grandchildren.

She talked about taking them to amusement parks and to see The Lion King. Those comments gave a rare look at the family away from sets, scripts, and awards.

For Michael, that meant balancing work connected to his mother’s career with life as a husband and father.

His Mother Was Very Close to the Grandchildren

The bond between Roberts and Michael’s children became one of the warmest parts of her later interviews.

She had spent years playing forceful mothers and grandmothers on television, but the real family role mattered just as much to her.

Roberts described simple outings rather than glamorous events. She talked about amusement parks, theater trips, and spending time together.

That difference mattered. Her public image was tied to a loud television family, while her real family life included ordinary days with Michael, Jane, and the children.

He rarely spoke publicly about those years, but his mother’s own interviews made clear that his family was a major part of her life.

He Also Worked as a Producer

Michael Cannata Jr. also worked beyond his role as his mother’s manager.

He is credited as a producer on Margarine Wars, a 2012 comedy-drama that also featured Doris Roberts in the cast. Production records list Michael R. Cannata among the film’s producers.

That project brought mother and son into the same production from different sides. Roberts appeared on screen, while Michael worked behind it.

IMDb also lists producer work on Julie and production-management credits on projects including It Takes Two and The Winner. Unlike Roberts, he worked mainly behind the camera.

That behind-the-scenes path fit the way he had already worked for years: close to entertainment, but usually away from the center of attention.

Working With Doris Roberts Was Also Family Business

The manager-client relationship between mother and son could have been difficult, especially during the busiest years of her career.

Yet public interviews suggest a high level of trust between them.

Roberts was known for having strong opinions about work. She spoke openly about age discrimination in Hollywood, testified before Congress on the issue, and kept acting well into her later years.

Having her son involved in management gave part of that career a family structure.

Michael Cannata Jr. was not simply someone who appeared beside her at events. He was involved in the practical side of the work while also remaining her son, husband to Jane, and father of three.

The Family Stayed Close Through Her Later Years

Roberts continued working after Everybody Loves Raymond ended in 2005.

She appeared in movies, television shows, and holiday films, and she remained active in public life. Her later work also included advocacy, charity involvement, and speaking about the treatment of older actors.

Michael Cannata Jr. remained part of the family circle around her.

When Roberts died in Los Angeles in April 2016 at age 90, reports identified him as the family member who informed her representative of her death.

The Los Angeles Times obituary named Michael, Jane, Kelsey, Andrew, and Devon among the relatives who survived her.

That obituary brought together the two sides of Roberts’ life: the actor known around the world and the mother and grandmother whose closest family stayed largely private.

A Different Path From His Famous Mother

Michael Cannata Jr. spent much of his adult life close to entertainment without following the same path as Doris Roberts.

He did not become known for acting, stand-up comedy, or a long-running television role. His work was more practical and less public.

Management placed him behind contracts and career decisions. Producing put him behind the camera. Family life kept him connected to a mother whose fame grew much larger during his adulthood.

That combination helps explain why his name appears often in stories about Roberts even though he never sought the same kind of attention.

Why the Mother-Son Relationship Still Stands Out

Doris Roberts spent nine seasons playing one of television’s most famous mothers. Her real relationship with her only son was much quieter, but it shaped her life in a more personal way.

She trusted him with part of her career. She was close to his wife and children. She spoke often about the joy she found in her grandchildren.

Michael, in turn, stayed near the work without becoming part of the performance.

That is the clearest way to understand his place in her story. He was not simply “Doris Roberts’ son.” He was a manager, producer, husband, father, and the person who helped connect one of television’s best-known mothers to a private family life away from the screen.
