Marie De Narde: Jack Lord’s Wife, Fashion Career, and Hawaii Legacy
Marie De Narde was a St. Louis-born fashion designer and the longtime wife of actor Jack Lord, star of the original Hawaii Five-O. She studied fashion and art in Paris, worked in New York, and later left her own career as Lord moved deeper into acting; for decades, she helped him manage work, home life, and the pressure that came with fame.
Her story started long before Steve McGarrett made Jack Lord a household name; it stretched from Paris fashion study and a stone house near Woodstock to early morning script practice in Hawaii. Later came a quiet life in Kahala and a charity fund that still supports people across the islands.
From St. Louis to Paris and New York
Marie De Narde was born Marie L. de Narde in St. Louis to French parents. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported that she studied fashion and art in Paris; she later moved to New York and worked as a fashion designer.
She had her own creative path before Jack became famous; she had studied abroad, worked in design, and built a life in New York while he was still finding his place.
Fashion did not vanish from her life after marriage; when the Lords’ belongings were prepared for sale after her death, the Honolulu Advertiser reported that clothing made by Marie was part of the collection.
The Stone House That Led Her to Jack Lord
Marie De Narde told the story of meeting Jack in a 1996 interview with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
She had designed and built a stone country house near Woodstock, New York, for weekend trips. Jack saw the house while he was in the area and wanted to know more about it; he found Marie’s New York City address through a local merchant. Then he left messages with her doorman for several weeks.
Marie first thought he was a pushy real estate agent; she finally agreed to meet him. Instead of a short talk, they spoke for hours; Jack told stories about his time at sea, and the two formed a bond.
Their romance began with a house, not with Hollywood; it was years before Hawaii Five-O made Jack one of television’s best-known faces.
Marriage Before Hawaii Five-O Fame
Marie told the Star-Bulletin that she and Jack married in New York City on April 1 in the early 1950s.
Jack’s career grew through stage, film, and television work. He played Felix Leiter in Dr. No in 1962; he also starred in the western series Stoney Burke before Hawaii Five-O began in 1968.
Marie De Narde stepped away from her fashion career as her husband’s acting work grew; local obituary coverage later described her as the person who handled many daily and office tasks around his career.
Their marriage lasted until Jack’s death in Honolulu on January 21, 1998.
The Work Behind Jack Lord’s Career
Marie De Narde was more than a spouse who appeared beside a famous actor. Friends and co-workers remembered her as part of Jack’s daily work life; during the Hawaii Five-O years, the couple often got up around 3:30 in the morning.
Jack used the quiet time to practice scenes and make changes before filming; Marie sat with him while he read his lines aloud.
James MacArthur, who played Danny “Danno” Williams, later said Marie helped Jack get ready for work; he also remembered her visits to the set. Eddie Sherman, who knew the couple, called her the “rock behind Jack Lord.”
She also helped with the many small tasks that came with his fame; that work stayed mostly out of sight. Still, it gave Jack a trusted partner who knew his work habits and the way he liked to prepare.
Marie called herself an “old-fashioned wife” in 1996; her daily life included cooking, organizing, helping with scripts, and protecting the privacy both of them valued.
Life During the Hawaii Five-O Years
Hawaii Five-O ran from 1968 to 1980 and tied Jack Lord closely to Hawaii; Marie’s life changed with the show too.
The couple settled in Honolulu and lived for years in a Kahala condo with an ocean view; their home offered a quiet contrast to Jack’s public life.
Marie talked about ordinary routines more than celebrity events; she cooked food Jack loved, including lasagna and chicken cacciatore. Some mornings began with coffee, hot milk, and a croissant before work.
Jack became more involved in the creative side of Hawaii Five-O as the years passed. He produced and directed episodes as well as acting in the lead role; Marie remained part of the structure around that demanding schedule.
People linked to the show remembered her as kind, well dressed, and generous. Local entertainers also recalled her interest in Hawaii charities.
The Choice Not to Have Children Together
Marie and Jack did not have children together; Marie spoke about that choice in her 1996 interview.
She said she once pictured a large family and even thought about having six children; when Jack chose show business, the couple decided not to raise children together. Marie described that choice as part of the life they built.
Jack had a son from his first marriage to Ann Willard; his son, John Joseph Ryan Jr., died as a child in 1955. Marie was not his mother.
Marie said that not having children led her to give a lot of affection to younger people around her; in later years, she and Jack also doted on a cat from the Hawaiian Humane Society.
The detail fits another part of their Hawaii life. Animal welfare later became one of the causes helped by the couple’s charity fund.
Quiet Years in Kahala
When Hawaii Five-O ended in 1980, Jack Lord mostly left acting behind; he and Marie stayed in Hawaii.
Their later life was quiet; by the mid-1990s, Jack rarely appeared in public. Marie became his main caregiver and guarded his privacy.
She told the Star-Bulletin that he liked staying home, reading, sitting on the lanai, and spending time with her; she also said she missed seeing him paint with the same energy he once had.
Marie De Narde became the voice of the household when questions came up about Jack’s health. She spoke about their routines but kept clear limits around access to him.
That balance had shaped much of their marriage. She supported a public career while keeping their home life private.
Jack Lord’s Death and Marie’s Later Years
Jack Lord died in 1998 at age 77. Marie stayed in the Kahala home they had shared for years.
Friends still saw her around Honolulu. James MacArthur and others sometimes took her to lunch. She would talk about Jack and memories from the Hawaii Five-O years.
Marie De Narde died at her Kahala home on October 13, 2005. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin said she was in her 90s. A trustee of her estate did not release a cause of death.
She asked that no funeral service be held; instead of flowers, people were encouraged to give to the Jack and Marie Lord fund.
That request matched the way the couple had supported Hawaii causes for years.
A Charitable Legacy Worth More Than $40 Million
Marie De Narde and Jack Lord had already started planning their giving long before either of them died.
The Hawaii Community Foundation says the couple created the Jack and Marie Lord Funds in 1988. Their first gift was $50,000. By the time Jack died in 1998, the fund had grown to about $750,000.
After Marie’s death in 2005, the fund received the rest of the couple’s estate. The foundation valued that gift at more than $40 million; at the time, it was one of the largest gifts made to a charity organization in Hawaii.
The money was set aside for 12 local nonprofits chosen by the Lords. The groups included hospice care, the Salvation Army in Hawaii, the Bishop Museum, the Hawaiian Humane Society, Hawaii Public Television, guide-dog services, and programs tied to vision care and disability support.
The Honolulu Advertiser reported in 2006 that the fund was expected to produce about $1.6 million to $2 million each year for those groups. Their estate also included property, investments, art, keepsakes, and clothing made by Marie.
That giving is a major part of Marie De Narde’s story. She had a fashion career, helped support one of classic television’s best-known actors, spent decades in Hawaii, and helped leave behind a fund that continued serving the community after her death.
She did not seek a public career from her marriage. Yet people who knew the Lords made clear that her role in Jack’s life was deep and lasting. The choices they made together also left a real mark on Hawaii.
