Chase Bowman: K. Michelle’s Son, NCCU Leadership, and Business Path

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 23, 2026October 2, 2026

Chase Bowman is the son of R&B singer and television personality K. Michelle, but his adult life has taken shape far from reality TV. At North Carolina Central University, he studied business, served as Junior Class President, competed in a national business challenge, led an Alpha Phi Alpha chapter, and appeared in the university’s 2025 commencement program. He has since moved into consulting and has said he was accepted to Berkeley Haas through its deferred MBA pathway.

His mother’s fame explains why many people know his name. His education, campus leadership, and early career explain who he is becoming on his own.

Growing Up With a Famous Mother, but Outside the Camera

K. Michelle, born Kimberly Michelle Pate, built her career through music and shows such as Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. She was already a mother before that fame grew.

In a 2010 Essence interview, she spoke about the hard side of working while raising a child. Touring and recording helped her provide for her son, but those jobs also kept her away from home. She said missing important moments was painful.

As he grew older, she kept most of his daily life away from television. That choice gave him a more private childhood than many children of reality-TV stars.

By the time he was preparing for college, her comments about their relationship had changed with his age. In a 2019 interview with MadameNoire, she said they had a strong bond and that he understood why she had worked so much when he was young.

That background matters because it helps explain why Chase Bowman did not enter adulthood through music, acting, or a reality series. School became the place where his own story started to become public.

North Carolina Central University Became His Own Space

He attended North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, an HBCU with a long history in business, law, public service, and student leadership.

Official NCCU records show that he was active well beyond the classroom. In 2023, the university named him Junior Class President for the 2023–24 school year. That role placed him inside student government and gave him a formal voice in campus life.

The university’s Student Government Association exists to represent students and give them a role in campus decisions. Serving as class president therefore meant more than holding a title. It required him to represent classmates and take part in the wider life of the school.

His name also appears in NCCU academic records. The university listed him in honors materials and among foundation scholarship awardees. Its Spring 2025 commencement program also includes Chase Bowman among School of Business candidates.

Those records make the college story easier to see. He was not simply enrolled at the university. He was active in its academic and student life.

The 2023 Moguls in the Making Competition

One of his strongest college achievements came in 2023, when he joined an NCCU team at the national Moguls in the Making competition.

The event was supported by Ally Financial and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Students from HBCUs were asked to create business ideas that addressed real problems linked to economic mobility.

Chase Bowman worked with Jordan Jackson, Kyndall Ray, and Zyon Rodgers. Their idea was called Food 4 Thought. It focused on affordable ready-to-heat meals for lower-income households while also promoting nutrition and financial literacy.

The team finished second nationally.

The official competition announcement says each student on the NCCU team received a $10,000 scholarship. It identified him as a junior finance student from Memphis, Tennessee.

The value of the competition went beyond the scholarship. The students had to build a business idea, think through costs, explain a social problem, work as a team, and present their plan to judges.

Those are the same kinds of skills that matter later in finance and consulting: clear thinking, teamwork, numbers, and the ability to explain an idea under pressure.

Leadership Continued Through Alpha Phi Alpha

His campus leadership was not limited to student government.

During his final year at NCCU, Chase Bowman publicly identified himself as president of the Gamma Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Phi Alpha is the oldest intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity founded for African American men and has deep roots on HBCU campuses.

His own posts from that time show a service-focused side of the role. At the start of the school year, he described helping pass out roses and positive messages to students as a way to welcome them back to campus.

That may seem like a small event, but it gives the role a human shape. Fraternity leadership can involve planning, service, mentoring, events, and responsibility for the group. Combined with student government, it shows that he kept taking on work that involved other people, not just his own résumé.

Education Was More Than a Background Detail

K. Michelle has spoken for years about education in her own life. She finished college while raising a baby and has said that family support helped her get through the final part of school.

Her son later followed a college path of his own.

NCCU’s scholarship records include Chase Bowman as a foundation scholarship recipient. The university’s honors materials also list his name, and the 2025 commencement program places him among business students.

His public professional profile says he attended NCCU from 2021 to 2025 and earned a 3.7 GPA. That profile also says he was accepted to the Berkeley Haas MBA Accelerated Access program.

Berkeley’s deferred MBA route allows selected students to gain work experience before starting the degree. In his own announcement, he said the acceptance came with support through the SIEML program and that he planned to spend the next few years building work experience before attending.

That update fits the direction already visible during college. Finance study, a national business pitch contest, campus leadership, and graduate business plans all point toward the same field.

His First Steps Into Consulting

After college, his public professional profile began listing Mastercard in Arlington, Virginia.

He describes himself as an associate consultant with Mastercard Advisors. For a recent graduate, that is a natural next step after studying business and finance.

Consulting work often asks people to study a problem, work with data, understand what a client needs, and turn that information into a clear recommendation. Those skills connect well with the work he had already done at NCCU.

The Moguls in the Making contest required a team to understand a problem and pitch a solution. Student government required communication and leadership. Fraternity work added service and group responsibility.

Put together, the move into consulting does not look random. It looks like the next stage of the same path.

There Is Another Chase Bowman in Film

People searching this name can easily run into the wrong person.

A different Chase Bowman works in film and television as a cinematographer and director of photography. Those screen credits do not belong to K. Michelle’s son.

The distinction is simple once the records are separated. The filmmaker is tied to camera work and production credits. K. Michelle’s son is tied to North Carolina Central University, finance, student government, Alpha Phi Alpha, business competitions, and consulting.

This mix-up explains why some online profiles can become inaccurate when they pull information from search results without checking whether two people share the same name.

The Relationship With K. Michelle

His mother remains an important part of the story, but the relationship makes more sense when it is seen across time.

When he was young, K. Michelle often spoke about the guilt that came with being away for work. She was building a career, raising a child, and trying to create financial stability at the same time.

As he became a teenager and then a college student, the public tone changed. She described a son who understood more about the choices she had made and the pressure she had faced.

That change is common in families. A child may first feel the absence of a working parent, then understand the reasons more clearly as an adult.

There is no need to turn that into a dramatic celebrity story. The available interviews already show something more relatable: a working mother, a son growing older, and a relationship that changed as both of them moved into new stages of life.

What His College Years Say About Him

By the end of his time at NCCU, several themes kept repeating.

He studied business. He took part in student government. He competed in a national entrepreneurship challenge. He joined Alpha Phi Alpha and later led his chapter. His name appeared in university scholarship and honors records.

Those experiences show a young man who used college as more than a place to earn a degree. He used it to test different kinds of leadership and business work.

That does not mean his future is already settled. Early careers change. Graduate-school plans can change too.

What can be said with confidence is that his adult path has developed around business, leadership, and consulting rather than entertainment.

Building a Name Beyond Family Fame

Chase Bowman first became known because he was K. Michelle’s son. That family connection will probably remain part of how people find him.

It is no longer the most useful way to understand his life.

His years at North Carolina Central University gave him a public record of his own. Junior Class President, honors recognition, scholarship support, the Moguls in the Making competition, Alpha Phi Alpha leadership, and a move into consulting all tell a more complete story.

He is still early in his career, so there is no reason to make it sound bigger than it is. What stands out is the direction. He has moved from a private childhood beside a famous parent into a young adult life built around school, service, and business.
