Juanita Wilkinson: Sugar Ray Leonard’s First Wife, Family, and Divorce

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 8, 2026October 7, 2026

Juanita Wilkinson is best known as Sugar Ray Leonard’s high school sweetheart and first wife. She knew him before Olympic gold, world titles, and global fame. Their story began in Maryland as teenagers, included two sons and a 1980 wedding, and ended in divorce in 1990 after a difficult final stretch.

In this article, you’ll learn how Juanita Wilkinson met Leonard, what life looked like before his boxing fame, how their family grew, and what happened during the marriage and divorce. It also covers her role in his early career, their sons, and the public events that followed the split.

A Teen Romance in Palmer Park

Their story started long before big arenas and title fights.

A 1980 Washington Post profile traced the relationship back to the summer of 1972. Both were young and living near Palmer Park, Maryland.

Juanita Wilkinson was still in school. Ray Leonard was a local teenager with a growing gift for boxing. They came from working-class families and knew each other before boxing changed the scale of his life.

The relationship soon became serious. In 1973, while they were still teenagers, Juanita became pregnant. Their first son, Ray Charles Leonard Jr., was born before his father became an Olympic champion.

That early family life became part of Leonard’s public story. He trained for the 1976 Montreal Olympics while his girlfriend and young son remained in Maryland.

The Photo Leonard Carried Into the Olympics

One small detail from the 1976 Games became famous.

Leonard taped a photo of Juanita and their son to his sock or shoe while he competed. The image fit the public picture of a young boxer fighting for his family as well as for a medal.

He won Olympic gold in the light welterweight division. His speed, smile, and clean style made him one of the most popular athletes in the United States.

Juanita Wilkinson was already part of that story. She had been there before the medal, before the endorsement deals, and before Leonard became a pro.

The months around the Olympics were not simple, though. A child-support case tied to public aid for their son became a local news story. The Washington Post later explained that Juanita had signed paperwork so Ray Jr. could receive food help. Leonard had not denied being the child’s father.

The headlines made a private family issue public at the exact moment his fame was taking off.

Family Life During Leonard’s Rise

After the Olympics, Leonard turned pro. His career moved fast.

By the late 1970s, he was already earning large purses and drawing packed crowds. Juanita and Ray Jr. were often part of the scene around his fights.

A 1978 Washington Post report described four-year-old Ray Jr. sitting with his mother at ringside. Fans knew the boy and asked him how his father would do in the ring.

That gives a good picture of the family’s life at the time. Boxing fame was no longer something happening only to Leonard. It had reached the people closest to him.

For Juanita Wilkinson, that meant raising a child while her longtime partner became a national sports star. Travel, press attention, training camps, and business deals all became part of their world.

The 1980 Wedding

The couple married on January 19, 1980, in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

The timing mattered. Leonard had just won the WBC welterweight title from Wilfred Benitez in late 1979. He was no longer a rising prospect. He was a world champion.

Their six-year-old son served as the ring bearer.

The wedding joined two parts of a story that had already lasted for years. They had been teenage sweethearts. They had become parents. They had gone through the pressure of the Olympics and the start of a major pro career.

Now they were married while Leonard stood near the top of boxing.

A Second Son Joined the Family

In 1984, the couple welcomed a second son, Jarrel Leonard.

By then, Leonard’s life had changed again. A detached retina had forced him to step away from boxing in 1982. He later returned, retired again, and then made one of the sport’s most famous comebacks.

Family life continued through those shifts.

Ray Jr. was growing up. Jarrel was still small. Their father was moving between retirement and comeback plans. Juanita was raising the boys while the household dealt with fame, money, and the stress that followed a career built around elite sport.

The Marriage Became Painful Behind Closed Doors

The public image did not show the whole marriage.

By the end of the 1980s, the relationship had broken down. The couple separated in 1989, and Leonard filed for divorce in 1990.

Court papers made serious claims public. Juanita said her husband had been physically abusive and had used cocaine and alcohol during parts of the marriage.

The story became even more important in 1991 when the Los Angeles Times reviewed sworn divorce records. Those records showed that Leonard had acknowledged drug and alcohol use. They also showed that he confirmed parts of her account of physical abuse.

Leonard later held a news conference. He admitted using cocaine from 1983 to 1986 after the eye injury that had threatened his boxing career.

Juanita Wilkinson also acknowledged limited drug use of her own in sworn testimony. The court record showed a marriage under severe strain during those years.

The Divorce Settlement Stayed Private

The divorce fight looked ready for a public court hearing in late 1990.

That hearing never happened.

On November 2, 1990, the couple reached an out-of-court deal at the Montgomery County Courthouse. The terms were not made public.

They left the courthouse together and spoke in a calm way about the end of the marriage. The divorce became final in December 1990.

UPI reported that they kept joint custody of their two sons. Juanita said they planned to keep working together as parents.

That point mattered. The marriage was over, but Ray Jr. and Jarrel still connected them as a family.

Motherhood Stayed at the Center of Her Story

Juanita Wilkinson’s two sons were part of her public life from the start.

Ray Jr. was there before the Olympics. His image traveled with his father into the ring in Montreal. As a young child, he was already known to boxing fans around Maryland.

Jarrel arrived eight years after the Olympic win and four years after his parents married.

During the 1990 divorce, custody and support were major parts of the legal case. After the settlement, both parents said they would stay involved in raising the boys.

The sons also appeared in later media about their father. A 2002 Los Angeles Times report noted that Juanita, Ray Jr., and Jarrel took part in a TV project about Leonard’s life and career.

That gave her a later public role in telling the family story from her own point of view.

She Had Work Outside Her Husband’s Career

Juanita was often described in the press through her marriage, but she also had work of her own.

During the 1990 divorce settlement, the Washington Post identified her as a clothing boutique owner.

That detail is easy to miss because boxing dominated most coverage of the family. Yet it shows that her adult life was not limited to attending fights or managing a famous home.

Her business work also came during a time when the marriage was under heavy stress. By the final years of the relationship, she was dealing with family problems while also running a retail business.

Life After Sugar Ray Leonard

After the divorce, Juanita stepped away from the level of national attention that had surrounded the marriage.

She later took part in media tied to Leonard and their sons, including the 2002 television project about his life.

In 1990, she said she wanted to write a guide for women trying to build an identity beyond a spouse’s shadow. That comment showed how she framed the next stage of her life after the marriage ended.

Her best-known public story remained the one she had lived: teenage love, early parenthood, the rise of a champion, marriage, two sons, and divorce.

Why Juanita Wilkinson Still Draws Search Interest

People still search for Juanita Wilkinson because her life sits inside a major chapter of boxing history.

She knew Sugar Ray Leonard before the fame. She was there when he trained for the Olympics. She raised their first son while Leonard chased gold. She married him after he became a world champion.

She was also part of the difficult years that came after his eye injury and first retirement.

Her story adds context to the public image of one of boxing’s biggest stars. The bright part included Olympic gold, title fights, money, and a family that fans recognized. The hard part included addiction, abuse, separation, and divorce.

Both sides shaped the family.

Juanita Wilkinson’s Place in Leonard’s Story

Juanita Wilkinson was not a late addition to Sugar Ray Leonard’s life. She was there near the beginning.

The relationship started when both were young. Their first child arrived before Leonard became an Olympic champion. Their marriage came after years together, not after fame had already settled in.

That makes her role important when people look back at his rise.

She saw the years before money. She lived through the years when fame arrived fast. She raised two sons inside that world. She also spoke publicly when the marriage became unsafe and painful.

The divorce ended their life as a couple, but not their shared role as parents.
