Karen Still: Dance Career, Teddy Pendergrass Marriage, and Philadelphia Story

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 19, 2026October 7, 2026

Karen Still is a former Philadanco dancer best known for her long relationship and marriage to soul singer Teddy Pendergrass. She danced in his stage shows, was part of his life before and after the 1982 crash that left him quadriplegic, married him in 1987, and remained his wife until their 2002 divorce.

In this article, you’ll learn about Karen Still’s dance career, how her life became connected with Pendergrass, the years around his recovery and musical comeback, their 1987 wedding, and why her story is closely tied to Philadelphia’s Black dance and soul music history. Let’s start with the work she was doing before the marriage made her name familiar to music fans.

Dance Was Part of Her Story From the Start

Karen Still had a professional connection to dance before she became known through Teddy Pendergrass. She was a former dancer with Philadanco, the Philadelphia Dance Company founded by Joan Myers Brown in 1970.

Philadanco was created to give Black dancers professional opportunities at a time when many local schools and companies denied them access. The company grew into one of Philadelphia’s most important dance institutions, known for strong training, modern dance, ballet, and work rooted in African American performance traditions.

Still also danced in Pendergrass’s stage shows. That placed her inside the same performance world as the singer, not simply beside it. His concerts were built around voice, movement, atmosphere, and a strong bond with the audience. A dancer working in those shows was part of the live experience that helped make his solo career so distinctive.

She Knew Pendergrass Before the Accident Changed His Life

Their relationship began before the event that divided Pendergrass’s life and career into two very different periods.

On March 18, 1982, his Rolls-Royce crashed in Philadelphia. The accident broke his neck and caused a severe spinal cord injury. A 1984 Washington Post profile described him as quadriplegic and explained that he had only limited movement in his shoulders and elbows.

Before the crash, Pendergrass had been one of the most physical and charismatic performers in R&B. He had already left Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and built a major solo career on romantic songs, sold-out concerts, and a commanding stage presence.

After the crash, everyday life became far more difficult. Touring stopped. His physical independence changed. Recovery became part of his daily routine.

Karen Still remained close. In that same Washington Post profile, she was identified as his girlfriend. Pendergrass described her as someone he trusted, giving a rare direct look at her place in his personal life during the recovery years.

His Musical Comeback Happened While They Were Together

Pendergrass returned to recording even though the accident had changed his body and the way he could work.

In 1984, he released Love Language. The album included “Hold Me,” his duet with Whitney Houston. The song became one of Houston’s earliest major recordings and also marked an important step in Pendergrass’s return to commercial music after the crash.

He returned to a major live stage in 1985 at Live Aid in Philadelphia. The appearance carried extra meaning because it happened in his hometown and showed fans that he was still able to perform in public after years of recovery.

Still was part of his life through this entire transition. She had known him during the years of full physical mobility and stayed with him while he rebuilt his career around a wheelchair and a very different daily life.

That long timeline is one of the most important parts of her story. Their relationship was not a brief connection formed after his fame. It stretched across the height of his early success, the crash, the recovery period, and the start of his comeback.

Their 1987 Wedding Was Small and Private

Karen Still and Teddy Pendergrass married in June 1987 at his home in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania.

Contemporary newspaper coverage said about 50 guests attended the roughly 20-minute ceremony. The report also said the couple had lived together for five years and had first met in 1977, when Pendergrass was beginning his solo career.

That means their connection went back about a decade by the time they married. It also places Still in his life long before the 1982 crash and well before his comeback had fully taken shape.

The timing of the wedding matters. By 1987, he had already returned to the studio, appeared at Live Aid, and begun rebuilding his place in music. Their marriage started during that second chapter rather than during the first rush of his fame.

The 12 Red Roses Became Their Best-Known Personal Story

One of the most memorable details from the relationship came from Karen Still herself.

She later recalled that Pendergrass sent her one red rose each day for 12 days before proposing. The story was included in The Guardian’s obituary for Teddy Pendergrass.

It is a small detail, but it gives the relationship a personal shape. Pendergrass had built much of his public image around love songs, romance, desire, and emotional openness. The proposal story reflected that same side of him away from the stage.

His biggest solo recordings had made him one of the defining romantic voices of late 1970s and 1980s R&B. Songs such as “Close the Door,” “Turn Off the Lights,” and “Love T.K.O.” were central to that image. The red roses story connected the public performer with a private act of courtship.

Marriage Spanned Much of His Second Career

Their marriage lasted 15 years, from 1987 to 2002.

During that time, Pendergrass continued recording, performing, and building a public life after the crash. He could no longer rely on the same physical stage style that had defined his early solo years, so his voice, phrasing, and emotional delivery became even more important.

He also became more involved in spinal cord injury advocacy. In the late 1990s, he formed an organization designed to help people with spinal cord injuries move toward education, work, and greater independence.

Karen Still shared much of that period with him as his wife. Her place in his story therefore belongs to the years when he was not only a soul star but also a disabled artist rebuilding his career and public identity.

Her Philadanco Background Adds Important Philadelphia Context

Karen Still’s dance career gives the story a deeper local connection.

Philadelphia in the 1970s was a major center for Black music and performance. The city produced the sound linked with Philadelphia International Records, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O’Jays, Patti LaBelle, and many other artists. At the same time, Philadanco was building a professional space for Black dancers who had often been excluded from other institutions.

Still came from the dance side of that creative world. Pendergrass stood near the center of the city’s soul music scene. Their relationship brought together two important parts of Philadelphia performance culture that were already closely connected through concerts, theaters, touring shows, and Black arts networks.

This local context also helps explain why her biography is more than a marriage story. She had her own professional identity inside a respected dance tradition before becoming widely known as Pendergrass’s partner.

The Divorce Closed a Long Chapter in His Life

Karen Still and Teddy Pendergrass divorced in 2002.

By that point, their relationship had covered roughly 25 years from their first meeting in 1977. Their marriage alone had lasted 15 years and included much of his post-accident recording and advocacy work.

The divorce ended a chapter that had started before his solo career fully took off and continued through one of the most difficult personal and professional transitions an artist could face.

Pendergrass later married Joan Williams in 2008. He died on January 13, 2010, at age 59 after serious health problems that included colon cancer.

Karen Still’s Place in the Teddy Pendergrass Story

Karen Still matters in Teddy Pendergrass’s story because she was present across several major turning points.

She knew him during the rise of his solo career. She remained close after the 1982 crash. She was part of his life when he returned to recording and live performance. She then spent 15 years as his wife during much of his second career.

Her dance background also gives her a clear identity beyond the marriage. As a former Philadanco dancer who also performed in his shows, she was already part of Philadelphia’s professional arts community.

That combination gives her story lasting interest. It connects a respected Black dance institution, one of Philadelphia soul’s biggest voices, a life-changing disability, a major musical comeback, and a long personal relationship that lasted through all of it.

A Clear View of Her Life and Legacy

Karen Still was a professional dancer before she became Teddy Pendergrass’s wife. She was connected with Philadanco, danced in his shows, and knew him before the 1982 crash changed his life.

The couple married in 1987 after years together and remained married until 2002. During that time, Pendergrass continued recording, returned to major stages, and rebuilt his public life while living with a severe spinal cord injury.

Still did not build the same public profile as the singer she married, but her place in his life is clear. She belonged to the creative world around him before the marriage, stayed through his most difficult transition, and shared a long part of the comeback years that followed.
