Neil Jason Wharton: Vince Neil’s Son, Music, Family, and Charity Work

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 5, 2026October 7, 2026

Neil Jason Wharton is Vince Neil’s eldest child and a rock singer. He was born on October 3, 1978, before Mötley Crüe became famous. Years later, he became the lead singer of Rock N Roll Junkies. The band played Mötley Crüe songs at charity shows and helped raise money in memory of his half-sister Skylar. His music career was much smaller than his father’s, but it had a real purpose.

In this article, you’ll learn about Neil Jason Wharton’s childhood, his band, his charity work, and his family. You’ll also see why his story is not simply about being Vince Neil’s son. He found his own way to stay close to rock music without trying to copy his father’s career.

He Was Born Before Vince Neil Became Famous

People reports that Neil was born on October 3, 1978, to Vince Neil and his high school girlfriend, Tami Jones. Vince was 17 at the time.

Neil Jason Wharton was already a young child when Mötley Crüe formed in Los Angeles in 1981. His father became a parent before the band turned him into a famous rock singer.

People also reports that Vince’s parents, Shirley and Odie Wharton, helped care for Neil when he was young. Vince later said he was not ready to be a father as a teenager and that his parents handled much of the early parenting.

So Neil did not grow up as a child who was born after fame had already arrived. His father was still very young, and the biggest Mötley Crüe years came later.

He Found His Own Place in Rock Music

Neil Jason Wharton did follow his father into music, but his path was very different.

He became the singer of Rock N Roll Junkies. The group played early Mötley Crüe songs and focused on the rough live sound that helped make the band popular in Los Angeles.

Neil never talked as if Rock N Roll Junkies were meant to become another Mötley Crüe. He knew fans at a major arena show were there to see the real band.

His group stayed much smaller. That suited him. He could sing the music he grew up around, play for fans, and keep the band connected to causes he cared about.

Rock N Roll Junkies Started With a Simple Idea

The band began after Neil sang at CrüeFest Hollywood.

In a 2007 interview with Illinois Entertainer, he said guitarist Steven Talbott invited him onstage. Neil enjoyed the performance, and the two later decided to start a band together.

They soon gave the group a bigger reason to exist. Neil said Rock N Roll Junkies could help raise money for the Skylar Neil fund.

Skylar was his younger half-sister. She died from cancer in 1995 at age four.

Neil also said the band members had regular jobs and did not depend on the group for money. The shows were about playing music and helping charity.

That is what made the band different from a normal tribute act. The music was familiar, but the reason behind the shows was personal.

CrüeFest Gave the Band Its Main Stage

CrüeFest became an important part of Neil’s music life.

In 2005, reports said Neil Wharton would front a Mötley Crüe tribute band at CrüeFest at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood. The event raised money for the Skylar Neil Memorial Fund.

Rock N Roll Junkies later played more CrüeFest shows. Neil became a familiar part of events built around Mötley Crüe fans and the family’s charity work.

The setup made sense. Fans came because they loved the music. Neil could sing songs tied to his father’s career, and the event could also raise money in Skylar’s memory.

It was not a large touring business. It was a smaller rock project with a clear purpose.

The Band Cared More About the Sound Than the Look

Many tribute bands copy the clothes, hair, and stage look of the original group. Rock N Roll Junkies did not work that way.

In his Illinois Entertainer interview, Neil said the band did not dress like Mötley Crüe. They wanted to play the songs well and bring back the feel of the group’s early club years.

He liked the harder songs from the catalog. People notes that some of his favorite tracks to sing included “Take Me to the Top,” “Primal Scream,” and “Public Enemy #1.”

That approach helped Neil keep some distance from his father’s image. He was singing Mötley Crüe songs, but he was not trying to dress, act, or perform exactly like Vince Neil.

Vince Neil Supported His Son’s Band

Neil Jason Wharton has also spoken about how his father reacted to Rock N Roll Junkies.

In the 2007 interview, Neil said Vince was supportive and thought the idea was cool. At that time, Vince had not seen the band because their schedules had not matched up.

There was no real reason for the two music careers to compete. Vince was fronting one of the best-known hard rock bands of his era. His son was playing smaller shows, many of them tied to charity.

Music gave them a family connection, but their lives onstage were very different.

Skylar’s Memory Stayed Close to the Music

Skylar Neil’s death had a lasting effect on the family.

People reports that she died in 1995 after being diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a form of kidney cancer that affects children. She was four years old.

Vince later started the Skylar Neil Memorial Foundation to support work linked to childhood illness.

For Neil Jason Wharton, CrüeFest and Rock N Roll Junkies became one way to support that cause. The shows brought together fans who already loved the music and gave them a way to help.

That family link gave the performances more meaning. Neil was singing songs connected to his father while also helping honor his younger sister.

He Also Used Music to Help After the Aurora Shooting

Neil’s charity work later reached beyond CrüeFest.

In 2012, Neil and his wife, Marie Wharton, helped organize Rockfest for Aurora in Colorado after the Aurora movie theater shooting. Marie had known Rebecca Wingo, one of the people who died in the attack.

CBS Colorado reported that Neil and Marie brought local rock bands together for the benefit. Rock N Roll Junkies also made its Colorado debut at the event.

Neil said the money raised would go to the victims’ families. The event also received support from Mötley Crüe, KISS, local sports teams, and businesses.

The benefit showed the same side of Neil that fans had already seen through CrüeFest. He liked using live music to bring people together and help when something bad had happened.

His Wife and Son Have Mostly Stayed Out of the Spotlight

CBS Colorado identified Marie Wharton as Neil’s wife in its 2012 coverage of Rockfest for Aurora.

Neil also became a father in October 2011. People reports that his son, Trace, was born that month. The birth made Vince Neil a grandfather.

Neil has kept most of his home life private. He has appeared in news stories when music or charity brought attention to him, but he has not built a public career around his marriage or his child.

That fits the rest of his life. He has a famous last name, but he has never lived with the same level of attention as his father.

Music Runs Through More Than One Part of the Family

Neil was not the only one of Vince Neil’s children who moved toward music.

People reports that Vince’s daughter Elle played bass with Loomis & the Lust and has described herself as a writer, singer, and bassist.

So both of Vince’s older children found their own way into music.

Neil’s link to Mötley Crüe was more direct because his band played the group’s songs. Elle chose a different route.

The family story is not about everyone trying to copy Vince. It is about people taking the same love of music in different directions.

Why People Still Search for Neil Jason Wharton

The biggest reason is his father. Vince Neil has been a famous rock singer for decades, so fans naturally want to know more about his family.

Many people who search Neil Jason Wharton want to know if he became a musician too. He did, but his story is very different from his father’s.

Neil played Mötley Crüe songs, but he did not build a large commercial career from them. His band stayed small and often played for charity.

That is what makes his story interesting. He stayed close to rock music and the family name without trying to live the same life Vince Neil lived.

A Quieter Rock Story With a Clear Purpose

Neil Jason Wharton grew up before Mötley Crüe became famous. Years later, he stepped onto a stage himself, but he chose a much smaller road.

Rock N Roll Junkies gave him a place to sing the songs connected to his family. CrüeFest gave those shows a charity purpose. Rockfest for Aurora showed that he was willing to use music to help people outside his own family too.

He also became a husband and father while keeping most of his private life away from the press.

For fans, the main point is simple. Neil is part of Vince Neil’s story, but he also has a story of his own. It is built around rock music, family, charity, and a life lived mostly away from major fame.
