Eileen Detchon: Broadway, Harry Morgan Marriage, Family, and M*A*S*H Link

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours September 8, 2026October 7, 2026

Eileen Detchon was an American stage performer and the first wife of actor Harry Morgan, best known for playing Colonel Sherman T. Potter on M*A*S*H. She appeared on Broadway in 1939, married Morgan in 1940, raised four sons with him, and remained his wife until her death in 1985. Her face also became part of M*A*S*H history because Morgan used her photograph as the picture of Colonel Potter’s wife, Mildred, on his office desk.

Her life connected early New York theater with one of television’s most loved shows. Eileen Detchon did not build the same screen career as her husband, but she was part of his life before Hollywood, through his long rise in film and television, and during the years that made Colonel Potter famous.

Broadway Came Before Hollywood

Eileen’s own stage work is an important place to begin. The Internet Broadway Database, run by The Broadway League, lists her as a performer in the original Broadway production of William Saroyan’s My Heart’s in the Highlands.

The play opened at the Guild Theatre in New York on April 13, 1939. It ran for 44 performances. Eileen appeared in the ensemble.

Harry Morgan was in the same production. At that time, he was still using his birth name, Harry Bratsburg. He played Mr. Wiley.

That shared Broadway credit puts both of them in the same theater world before Morgan became a familiar face in movies and television. The production also included future filmmaker Sidney Lumet and other actors connected with the Group Theatre.

The Group Theatre Years Shaped Their Early Story

My Heart’s in the Highlands was produced by the Group Theatre, one of the most important American theater companies of its era. Its circle included performers and directors such as Elia Kazan, Lee J. Cobb, and Robert Lewis.

Harry’s early career grew inside that world. He had already worked in theater before the 1939 Saroyan production, and his path was moving toward professional acting.

Eileen Detchon was part of that same stage period. Their marriage followed soon after. They wed in 1940, just one year after appearing in the Broadway production together.

That timing makes their story very different from a later celebrity marriage. She knew him before the film contracts, long-running TV roles, and Emmy recognition.

They Married Before Harry Morgan Became a Screen Star

The couple married in 1940. Harry’s film career had not yet started.

Two years later, he moved into Hollywood work. He signed with 20th Century Fox and appeared in films beginning in 1942. His early credits included To the Shores of Tripoli and The Ox-Bow Incident.

Eileen Detchon was there at the start of that transition from stage actor to working Hollywood performer. The move west changed the shape of the family’s life as Harry’s career became busier.

Over the next several decades, he worked in more than 100 films and became one of television’s most dependable character actors.

Four Sons Grew Up During Harry’s Long Career

Eileen and Harry became parents to four sons: Christopher, Charles, Paul, and Daniel.

The Washington Post later identified Christopher, Charles, and Paul among Harry Morgan’s surviving children. Their brother Daniel died in 1989.

Family life developed while Harry moved through film, radio-era entertainment, and television. By the 1950s, he was a regular TV presence. He later became known for shows including December Bride, Pete and Gladys, and Dragnet.

For the family, that meant living beside a career that rarely stood still. Harry worked steadily for decades, but his marriage to Eileen remained a constant part of his adult life.

Dragnet Carried a Small Personal Connection

Harry Morgan joined Dragnet in the late 1960s as Officer Bill Gannon, working beside Jack Webb’s Joe Friday.

There was a small family touch inside that role. Gannon’s wife was named Eileen.

The detail was minor on screen, but it became one of several ways Harry’s real family life crossed into his television work.

A much more visible example came a few years later when he joined M*A*S*H.

Her Photograph Became Part of Colonel Potter’s Office

Harry Morgan joined M*A*S*H as Colonel Sherman T. Potter in 1975. The character was a career Army officer, a surgeon, and a family man who often spoke warmly about his wife, Mildred.

The framed photograph on Potter’s desk was not a random studio portrait. It was a picture of Eileen Detchon.

The Independent noted that Morgan brought personal touches to the role, including using his wife’s photograph on the desk.

That small choice gave a piece of his real home life a permanent place inside the show. Viewers saw the photograph across many episodes while Potter talked about Mildred and life back home.

The M*A*S*H Connection Lasted for Years

Colonel Potter became one of Harry Morgan’s most famous roles. He stayed with the series until it ended in 1983.

That meant Eileen’s photograph remained in one of television’s best-known fictional offices during the show’s later seasons.

The detail worked because Potter’s marriage was part of his character. He was often written as a man who missed his wife and wanted to return home after the war.

Using a real family photograph made that connection more personal for the actor playing him.

Her Life Stayed Mostly Outside Hollywood Publicity

Eileen Detchon had a Broadway credit, but she did not spend the next four decades building a public screen career beside her husband.

Her life became much more closely tied to marriage and family while Harry’s work remained public.

That difference is one reason her name is less familiar than his. Harry appeared in movies, sitcoms, dramas, westerns, and one of the biggest television shows of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Eileen’s best-known public traces come from her stage work, family history, and the personal touches Harry carried into his acting.

Their Marriage Covered Nearly All of His Rise to Fame

The couple’s marriage lasted about 45 years, from 1940 until Eileen’s death in 1985.

Those years covered almost every major stage of Harry’s rise. They were married before his first film. They raised their children while he became a familiar TV actor. They were still together when M*A*S*H turned Colonel Potter into one of his defining roles.

That long timeline gives Eileen Detchon an important place in the larger Harry Morgan story. She was not someone who entered his life after success. She was there before it.

By the time M*A*S*H ended, they had already shared more than four decades of marriage.

Harry Morgan’s Career Kept Growing During Their Marriage

Harry’s career covered an unusually long stretch of American entertainment.

His film work included westerns, war movies, dramas, and comedies. His television career included major roles in December Bride, Dragnet, Hec Ramsey, and M*A*S*H.

He won an Emmy in 1980 for his work as Colonel Potter.

Eileen Detchon lived through those career changes with him. The actor who had shared a Broadway stage with her in 1939 eventually became one of the most recognizable character actors on American television.

Her Death Ended a 45-Year Marriage

Eileen died in 1985. Their marriage had lasted roughly 45 years.

The Washington Post and other major obituaries for Harry later described her as his first wife and noted that the marriage lasted until her death.

Harry remarried in 1986, when he married Barbara Bushman Quine. He remained married to Barbara until his death in 2011.

Eileen’s death therefore marked the end of the marriage that had covered his Broadway years, move to Hollywood, family life, and most famous television period.

Her Sons Carried the Family Into the Next Generation

The Morgan family continued through their sons and grandchildren.

Christopher, Charles, Paul, and Daniel grew up with a father whose career kept him in film and television for decades. Later reports identified Christopher as a producer and Charles and Paul as attorneys.

The family also appeared indirectly inside M*A*S*H. Harry’s grandson Jeremy Morgan created a horse drawing that was used in Colonel Potter’s office.

That meant the set included more than one small link to Harry’s real family. Eileen’s photograph stood on the desk, while his grandson’s artwork appeared nearby.

Why M*A*S*H Fans Still Notice Her

Most viewers never heard Eileen Detchon speak on M*A*S*H. She did not play Mildred Potter on screen.

Still, her image became familiar to anyone who paid attention to Colonel Potter’s office.

That creates an unusual television legacy. She was a Broadway performer in her own right, but many viewers know her face because her husband quietly placed it inside his most famous role.

It also fits the warmth of Colonel Potter. The character talked about home often, and the photograph helped make that home feel real.

A Broadway Performer at the Start of a Long Family Story

Eileen Detchon’s public story begins on a Broadway stage. In 1939, she appeared in My Heart’s in the Highlands, alongside the man who would become her husband.

They married the next year and built a family with four sons. Harry moved into films, then television, while their marriage lasted through nearly all of his rise to fame.

Her photograph later became one of the quiet details that helped shape Colonel Potter’s world on M*A*S*H.

Eileen Detchon may not have followed Harry Morgan into a long screen career, but her connection to Broadway, family, and one of television’s most memorable characters gives her a clear place in classic entertainment history.
