Brian Musso: Northwestern Football, Promus Career, and Heather Headley

Written byShahmeer Khan Hours October 13, 2026October 7, 2026

Brian Musso is a former Northwestern football player who later built a long career in private investing. He is also Heather Headley’s husband. Today, he is still tied to Promus and Waverly Advisors through senior investment and advisory work.

Many people first search his name because of Headley. But his own story is much bigger than that. It runs from Big Ten football to athlete training, then to private investment and family-office work.

Northwestern Came Before Business

Northwestern records show Musso played wide receiver there in the 1990s. Those years became an important part of the school’s football history.

School records still place his name high in the football program. He finished his career with 132 catches and 11 receiving touchdowns. For years, he ranked high on the school’s career receiving lists.

He also made an impact on special teams. The school later called him one of the Big Ten’s top punt returners of that era.

Musso played on the teams that won Big Ten titles in 1995 and 1996. The 1995 team reached the Rose Bowl. That season remains one of the biggest in Northwestern football history.

The 1995 run also gave Musso a place in a team fans still talk about. That group changed how people saw Northwestern football. For him, it meant playing on a big stage before he ever stepped into the business world.

His college career also brought an honor that went beyond football. The school named him its 1998 male Big Ten Medal of Honor winner. The award honors strong work in both sports and school.

Years later, the school still brought him back for alumni events. He was also interviewed for the school’s series about the 1995 season.

The NFL Was a Short Stop, Not the Final Goal

After college, Brian Musso spent time with the New York Jets. His pro football career did not become a long one.

That short NFL stop still mattered. It closed one part of his life and pushed him toward the next one.

He first stayed close to sports. Promus says he founded AllProTraining.com and Accelerated Athletics. The businesses focused on helping athletes train and improve.

That move made sense for a former college player. He already knew training, teamwork, and the pressure that comes with high-level sports.

But sports training did not become his final career. Over time, he moved into investing.

He did not move from one world to the next in one step. Each job gave him a new set of skills. Sports taught him pace and team work. His first firms taught him how to build. Promus gave him room to use those skills on a much larger scale.

Promus Became the Main Part of His Career

Waverly Advisors says Brian and Zach Musso founded Promus in 2006. Andy Code later joined them as they built a multi-family office in 2008.

A family office helps a family manage money, investments, and long-term plans. A multi-family office does that work for more than one family.

Promus grew around private deals and long-term money plans. Its work reached areas such as private equity and real estate.

This became a much bigger chapter than Musso’s years in football. Promus Equity now lists him as Co-Founder and Managing Partner.

The same page notes his Northwestern degree in organizational studies. It also lists the sports-training companies he started before Promus.

Football and finance look very different. Still, some skills carry over. Both need planning, teamwork, good judgment, and calm choices under pressure.

A 2025 Deal Changed Promus, but Did Not End It

Promus changed in a big way in late 2025.

Waverly Advisors bought selected Promus business lines. Waverly said those businesses managed about $3.1 billion for clients at the time.

That money belonged to client accounts and business funds. It was not Musso’s personal wealth.

The deal also did not wipe out Promus. Promus Holdings kept its direct private equity business, Promus Equity Partners.

Brian Musso also stayed involved. Promus said he would keep serving on investment committees tied to existing funds.

Current Promus Capital Management pages list him as a Strategic Advisor. Promus Equity still lists him as Co-Founder and Managing Partner.

So the 2025 deal changed his role. It did not end it.

What His Work Looks Like Now

As of 2026, Brian Musso still works in private finance and advisory roles.

Promus Capital Management lists him as a Strategic Advisor. Promus Equity lists him in a senior leadership role. Public adviser records also connect him with Waverly Advisors in Chicago.

He has now spent far more of his adult life in business than in football. That matters because many short profiles still lead with the NFL.

Football was an important start. Investing became the longer career.

His work today is easy to sum up. He helps guide private deals. He also stays involved with firms he helped build.

Northwestern Also Connected Him With Heather Headley

The school shaped more than Brian Musso’s career. Heather Headley studied there too.

Headley later built a major career in stage, music, and TV. She won a Tony Award for Aida and later won a Grammy. She also became known to TV viewers through shows such as Sweet Magnolias.

The two built very different careers. Headley worked in front of crowds and cameras. Musso moved into private business and investing.

Billboard reported that Heather Headley and Brian Musso married in Chicago on September 6, 2003.

More than 20 years later, they are still married.

Their Family Life Has Stayed Mostly Private

The couple has three children.

People reported in 2026 that the couple share three kids. The university has said the same.

The family has never turned daily home life into a public show. That fits Musso’s own style.

He appears on company pages and in university stories. He also shows up in some family coverage. But he does not live like a celebrity.

The family has long had ties to the Chicago area. A university alumni story said they lived in Wheaton, Illinois.

Their Home Made Room for Both Careers

Architectural Digest once showed how their work and home life fit together.

The magazine featured a coach house next to their Chicago-area home. It included a recording space for Headley, an office for Musso, a home theater, and family space.

The setup fits the way they built their lives. Headley needed room for music and creative work. Musso needed space for business.

Both careers had a place under one roof.

Why His Football Years Still Matter

Musso has worked in business for years. Football still explains part of who he is.

School records show he was a serious college player. He caught passes, returned punts, won team titles, and earned a major student-athlete honor.

He also stayed connected with the school after his playing days ended.

That history helps explain his later choices. His first businesses stayed close to sports. Then he moved into finance. The habits of planning and teamwork still helped.

Why People Still Search Brian Musso

His name connects sports, business, and entertainment.

Northwestern fans may know him as a former Wildcat. Business readers may know Promus. Entertainment fans may search him because of Heather Headley.

Each path shows a different part of the same life.

The most complete picture is not “former NFL player” or “celebrity husband.” Those labels leave out most of his adult career.

Brian Musso built sports businesses after football. He then helped create Promus and stayed with the firm through years of growth and a major 2025 deal.

That career is the main reason his story stands on its own.

The Career He Has Built Today

Today, Brian Musso is an adviser and business leader with a strong sports past.

He remains tied to Promus after the Waverly deal. Current company pages still place him in senior and advisory roles.

His marriage to Heather Headley is an important part of his public story. His business career is just as real.

He went from college football to athlete training, then into finance. That path tells his story far better than a short celebrity bio.
